Durban, South Africa – July 25, 2024: The Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation South Africa (PCMFSA) marked World Drowning Prevention Day with a significant event at the Kwavulindlebe School for the Deaf in Durban. The initiative, led by PCMFSA ambassador and renowned Olympian Terence Parkin, in collaboration with Lifesaving South Africa and Charles from Siyasindisa, successfully engaged 160 children in a day of education, empowerment, and fun.
A Day of Learning and Fun
The event was designed to impart crucial water safety knowledge to the young attendees while ensuring an enjoyable experience. Terence Parkin, known for his achievements as an Olympian and his advocacy for the deaf community, leveraged his unique position to connect with the children, many of whom are deaf or hard of hearing.
The day’s activities included interactive workshops, hands-on water safety drills, and engaging presentations tailored to meet the needs of the children. Lifesaving South Africa brought their expertise in water safety, demonstrating essential skills and techniques that can save lives. Adding a touch of fun and excitement, the Lifesaving South Africa mascot was present to entertain and educate the kids about water safety in an engaging and memorable way. Charles, the founder of Siyasindisa, an organization dedicated to drowning prevention through education and training, provided valuable insights and support throughout the event.
Raising Awareness and Building Confidence
World Drowning Prevention Day, established by the World Health Organization (WHO), serves as a critical reminder of the importance of water safety. With drowning being one of the leading causes of death worldwide, especially among children and young people, the day’s events aimed to raise awareness and promote preventive measures. The event at Kwavulindlebe School for the Deaf highlighted the necessity of inclusive and accessible safety education.
Terence Parkin emphasized the importance of such initiatives, stating, “It’s vital that we reach out to all communities, especially those who may be more vulnerable. By educating and empowering these children, we are not only teaching them to stay safe but also building their confidence and independence.”
A Community United for a Cause
The collaboration between PCMFSA, Lifesaving South Africa, and Siyasindisa demonstrated the power of partnerships in addressing critical issues. Lifesaving South Africa, an organization dedicated to preventing drowning through education, training, and promoting water safety, played a pivotal role in the day’s success. The event was a testament to what can be achieved when organizations unite for a common goal. The presence of community leaders, educators, and volunteers further underscored the collective commitment to making a difference.
Charles from Siyasindisa shared his thoughts on the event’s success, “Today was about more than just teaching water safety. It was about showing these kids that they are valued, capable, and deserving of the same opportunities as everyone else. It’s about creating a safer future for all.”
Chantell Wittstock, CEO of the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation South Africa, commented on the event’s impact, saying, “Our mission at PCMFSA is to ensure that every child has access to vital water safety education. Events like this one at Kwavulindlebe School for the Deaf are essential in reaching children who might otherwise be overlooked. We are incredibly proud of the work done today and the positive impact it will have on these young lives. Together, we are building a safer and more inclusive future.”
Continuing the Mission
The PCMFSA remains dedicated to promoting water safety and drowning prevention across South Africa. This event at the Kwavulindlebe School for the Deaf is part of a broader initiative to extend the Foundation’s reach and impact. By focusing on inclusive education and community engagement, the PCMFSA aims to ensure that no child is left behind.
As the day concluded with smiles, laughter, and newfound knowledge, it was clear that the event had left a lasting impression on all who attended. The children walked away not only with vital safety skills but also with a sense of empowerment and hope.
